Spanish Idioms: Aquí hay gato encerrado

We use this expression to say that there is a hidden reason that we do not want to reveal.

For example:

“Why wouldn’t Pepita want to see me?"

"Perhaps she's cheating on me with someone else... I think there's something fishy going on here".

The origin of this phrase dates back to the 16th - 17th centuries, when money was kept in bags made of cat fur and even the greedy were called "atagatos".

These bags, in turn, were carefully hidden and it is from this custom that the origin of the expression derives.

Usamos esta expresión para decir que existe una razón oculta que no se nos quiere desvelar. 

Por ejemplo:

“¿Por qué no querrá verme Pepita?”

“A ver si va a ser que me está engañando con otro… Me parece que aquí hay gato encerrado”.

El origen de esta frase se remonta a los siglos XVI – XVII, cuando el dinero venía guardado en bolsas hechas con piel de gato y hasta los avaros eran llamados “atagatos”.

Esas bolsas, a su vez,  se escondían cuidadosamente y es de esta costumbre que deriva el origen de la expresión.
