(Article in Spanish:  Salamanca con mascarilla obligatoria)

If there is one thing that we Salamanca residents have learned during this pandemic, in which we were among the last in Spain to be released from confinement, it is to act responsibly by wearing a mask. The majority of the population already uses it daily and correctly.

From Saturday 18th July, the new regulations imposed by the Junta de Castilla y León came into force, making it obligatory to pay a fine of 100 euros to anyone who fails to wear a mask in all open and closed spaces, both public and private, except at home.

In commerce and public transport it was already mandatory before. In parks and outdoor areas within the urban space and in workplaces is where it becomes strictly enforced to carry it from now on too. In swimming pools it is not necessary to wear it if the safety distance of 1.5 metres is complied with. On the terraces, the mask must be worn and only removed when eating or drinking. If you are doing sport you must keep a safe distance but it is not compulsory to wear it.

The way to put it on correctly is to cover your nose completely up to your chin. It seems that in Salamanca, with few exceptions, people are following the rules. Some citizens have opted to wear FFP2 type masks that prevent them from infecting others and being infected. As a fundamental alternative there are the surgical ones, which fundamentally avoid infecting others: they are more economical and give less heat in these summer days. It is important to remember that from July 18, masks with valves are prohibited.

National and local police officers are awaiting a warning and information on the new rules to all those who do not use this protection element. They have found isolated cases of non-compliance: some uninformed tourists and also some local citizens who wore the mask incorrectly (by hand, under the nose or on the neck). Also, during the first days, it was detected that in some terraces people took off their masks before they were served and during all the time they were sitting in them.

It is important that we put on the mask, keep the safety distance of one and a half meters and continue with hand hygiene as we have been doing until now. This is the key to avoid resurgence and to keep Salamanca as one of the Spanish provinces with less incidences of contagion today.
